The major conspiracy point of the novel revolves around the secret fact that, along with making the population pretty, this surgery also dulls the intellect, drive, and desires of the population at large, rendering them “bubbleheads” who rarely question authority or seek out more than a good time. Over and over we are told that this enhancement is based on evolutionary science, ensuring that those operated on are truly irresistible, even powerful over those non-altered individuals. The “Pretty-making” surgery is granted to every citizen when they turn 16 and it enhances their physical beauty as well as their muscular and immune systems. This begins in the first two books with a constant emphasis on physical appearance and the continual assertion that the only way to be beautiful was to undergo radical physical alteration at the hands of plastic surgeons. My biggest concern in the series was what I found to be a glorification of plastic surgery and self-mutilation. Please see the first two posts here and here. This is the third and last in my series of review posts on Scott Westerfeld’s series, including Uglies, Pretties, Specials and Extras.

Even at the preparatory stage, work on the agenda of the London conference had been divided between two subcommittees. 1 It had treated the trade and monetary issues separately. The World Monetary and Economic Conference held in London in 1933 was generally seen as the last, and lost, opportunity to arrive at a settlement. In this the conference broke through the paralysis that had afflicted interwar attempts at international cooperation. The fundamental insight that made it possible to agree on an outcome was that destructive disputes over trade could be overcome by an agreement on monetary matters. The conference was preceded by negotiations involving initially the United States and the United Kingdom and then the other members of the United Nations (the wartime coalition against the Axis powers). It represented both an attempt to learn the lessons of the Great Depression and a part of the preparation for peace. The Bretton Woods conference was the first successful systematic attempt to produce a legal and institutional framework for the world economic system. While Marston’s feminism was sometimes questioned due to his portrayal of themes of bondage and domination in the Wonder Woman comics, it must be viewed within his larger platform. Women were more loving than men, Marston argued, and would ultimately therefore make better rulers. William Moulton Marston, the inventor of Wonder Woman, used the Amazons in his comics to illustrate his theories of female superiority. In the Progressive era of the early 20th century, authors repurposed the myths in order to unlock their feminist potential. But were they heroes themselves? As the objects of Greek male anxiety, the Amazons were understood to be a threat to Greek civilization, in part due to their refusal to be subjected to the chief institution of patriarchy: marriage. The ancient Amazons, the equals of men, were among the fiercest opponents faced by the ancient Greek heroes Achilles, Heracles, and Theseus.
